Stump Grinding in West Jordan, UT

West Jordan’s farm history is written in its stumps. The siberian elm windbreaks and lone pasture cottonwoods that came down as the subdivisions filled in left behind some of the valley’s biggest grinds — four-foot trunks with root flares like a kraken, usually along a property line with a fence built around them in the meantime.

We grind them all: the farm-era monsters, the borer-killed ash from the ’90s subdivisions around Jordan Landing, and the everyday maple and pear stumps in between. Big stumps come out as a surprising volume of grindings — a pickup load or more — so we quote hauling and topsoil backfill up front, and the spot ends mowable instead of mounded.

How stump grinding works with us

  1. 1

    Locate and mark

We confirm utility locations (Blue Stakes) when grinding near lines, and mark the grind area.

  2. 2

    Grind below grade

Stump and surface roots ground to mulch, 8–12" down or deeper for replanting.

  3. 3

    Backfill or haul

Grindings left as mulch, or hauled and replaced with topsoil — your call at quote time.

Stump Grinding in West Jordan — your questions

How big a stump can you actually grind? I have a massive old cottonwood stump in West Jordan.

There’s no practical ceiling — big stumps just take more passes. Four-foot-plus cottonwood and elm stumps are routine for us on former farm ground in West Jordan; the machine grinds in overlapping sweeps until the whole flare is below grade. Expect a serious pile of grindings from one that size, and plan on hauling if you want lawn there.

A fence was built right next to our old windbreak stumps — can they still be ground?

Yes. We grind up to within a few inches of posts and rails, drop the cutting depth near the fence line so footings stay untouched, and finish the sliver against the fence by hand where needed. The stump side of the fence ends flush and plantable; the fence doesn’t get a scratch.
